Imposter Dentist Pulls Teeth & Performs Root Canals for Cash
A dental office manager who performed complicated procedures on unsuspecting patients while the real dentist was away has been charged with multiple counts relating to her dangerous quackery.
Authorities say the woman – 45-year-old Valbona Yzeiraj – seriously injured several patients after pulling teeth, performing root canals and injecting medications into their mouths, according to the Associated Press.
Yzeiraj was not trained or licensed to practice as a dentist in New York, but claims she did receive dentistry training in her native Albania.
Among the charges she pleaded not guilty to were five counts of unauthorized practice of a profession, four counts of assault, three counts of reckless endangerment and one count of attempted grand larceny, AP reported.
Yzeiraj was employed by Bronx dentist Dr. Jeffrey Schoengold, who promptly fired her when he discovered her unsanctioned dental activities. The dentist said the woman then tried to steal more than $20,000 from his practice.
One of the patients given a root canal by Yzeiraj got an infection from the procedure, while another was still feeling tooth pain two years after getting treatment.
